Here are 47,000 deserted mines from California, according to California's Office of Mine Reclamation (OMR). The OMR warns the public to lodge out of the abandoned mines for safety purposes but that is doesn' t end prospectors from inspecting the mines.  There are also more than 17,000 abandoned gold claims in California. Certain believe that is if a state produced gold once it might yet include some excellent gold left to mine.

The State of California Department of Conservation's OMR office maintains some geological library that has maps of old gold mines and states.
